We enjoy having city holidays, but this spring didn’t give us a chance to go anywhere warm. We had bought guided tour on the Cityspotting website and thought we’d have a go in our hometown.
As the last traces of winter cling to the cobblestone streets and the air holds a slight chill, there’s a unique beauty to be found in Porvoo during the early days of March. On a grey day, we embarked on a leisurely touristy walk in this old historic Finnish town, embracing the subdued yet enchanting atmosphere that enveloped its quaint streets.
The first thing that strikes you about Porvoo in March is the quietness. The hustle and bustle of the occasional tourists exploring its charming old town doesn’t break the serene calmness, allowing for a more intimate experience with the city’s rich history and architecture. As we meandered through the narrow alleys lined with colorful wooden houses, each painted in hues of red, yellow, and ochre, I couldn’t help but feel transported back in time.
The grey skies above seemed to cast a soft filter over the landscape, adding a touch of melancholy to the scene. Yet, far from dampening my spirits, the muted palette of greys and browns only served to enhance the town’s rustic charm. The cold breeze reminded me that winter wasn’t over yet.
Despite the somber sky, hints of life and warmth could still be found around every corner. Cozy cafes beckoned with the promise of steaming cups of coffee and freshly baked pastries, their interiors glowing invitingly against the dreary backdrop outside.
As the day draws to a close and the grey sky begins to fade into dusk, there’s a sense of quiet contentment that settles over Porvoo. Whether you’re a visitor exploring its cobblestone streets for the first time or a local rediscovering its hidden gems, there’s magic to be found in every corner of this charming Finnish town, even on the greyest of March days.
